From 15 till 29 December the exhibition 'Thonik en' is on view at Spiral Art Center in Tokyo, Japan.
During the exhibition Thonik will temporarily transform the entire institutes exhibition space. The Spiral cafe will be moved to the present exhibition area. Thonik will design new tables, plates and cups to suit the new location. This temporary eating and drinking area is going to be the installation that Thonik makes especially for the present architecture. Thonik incorporates Japanese food culture into their exhibition. This because Thonik sees this culture and its rituals as an essential basis for Japanese art and design. The other areas (including the present cafe area) will be used to show Thonik’s work up to now. The installation ‘Graphic Tapestries’ which was on show in Shanghai and Venice will also be displayed.
To accompany the exhibition a book with the exhibition title ‘Thonik en’ will be published in Japanese and English by author Noriko Kawakami, curator of 21-21 design space in Tokyo. Among the projects reviewed will be the identity of the Centraal Museum (Utrecht, NL) containing projects with Rietveld and Miffy. This publication will be available at the opening.
Thonik is the designer of the new identity of Spiral. It is also responsible for the campaign in honour of its 25th anniversary, which was launched September 2009. At the base of the design stood the original logo by the famous Japanese designer, Masayoshi Nakajo. The result is a clear and simple identity, where the name represents the Spiral building. The dots symbolize the various activities and projects of the art institution.
Spiral is a building by architect Fumihiko Maki in Aoyama, Tokyo. For already 25 years it is a multi-use building, with a gallery space, multipurpose hall, cafe, restaurant and bar, salon, and shops. Also known as the Wacoal Art Center, Spiral is a nexus of cultural life in Aoyama, presenting music, art, film, and theater events.
